Seventh-Grader Wei Claims One of Two Qualifying Spots

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- Twelve-year-old Michelle Wie on Monday claimed one of two qualifying spots for the LPGA Tour's season-opening Takefuji Classic.
Wie shot an 83 in windy conditions at Waikoloa Beach Resort, finishing second to fellow amateur Sally Soranaka, who shot a 79.
The 5-foot-10 seventh grader from Punahou Middle School will join the 132-player field in the $900,000 54-hole tournament, which starts Thursday.
In early February, Wie became the first female to qualify for the Hawaii Pearl Open, which typically attracts many of Japan's top golfers. She had rounds of 74 and 81 and missed the cut.
Wie also caused a stir at the Sony Open pro-am event last month, where she played with Tim Herron.
'She can bomb it,' Herron said. 'She's going to be a world-beater.'
