But for those whose culinary tastes are better served off the beaten path ' and enjoyed in a bit more relaxed setting ' we ventured off campus to sample a pair of local staples.
Bubba Garicas, just down Frederica Road from the resort on St. Simons Island, combines the best of Lowcountry seafood with Mexican favorites like fried shrimp tacos and the surprisingly exotic potato burrito. Garcias also has the most extensive drink menu on the island, but the highlight is the Mac-Daddy margarita.
The secret is a cup of beer. Takes away the bitterness, said Mac Barnhardt, the drinks namesake and longtime St. Simons Island resident.
For the truly gastronomic adventurous there is the Georgia Pig, a roadside BBQ staple located just off Intereststate-95 on State Highway 17. The modest wood-frame building oozes authenticity and an aged sign on the front door sets the scene, No animals on porch, No cameras inside.
And not an ounce of pretentiousness in the pulled pork or slow-smoked ribs. The dinning is on the rustic side, with picnic tables and paper plates the fare, and the service inspires visions of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld fame, but the food and sweet tea is to BBQ lovers what Augusta National is to golf fans ' a cant miss.
Or, as one member of the Methodist College golf team reasoned while he sat patiently awaiting his order, 'The longer you wait, the better it is.
