Randall Mell is a senior writer for GolfChannel.com, and has covered the game since 1997. He is a regular contributor to the Golf Central blog and covers the LPGA Tour and several PGA Tour events each year. He also contributes to several digital properties on GolfChannel.com, including On the Clock and Fantasy Central.
Prior to joining the network, he was the golf writer and national college football columnist at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Mell has won two-first place awards in the Golf Writers Association of America’s annual writing contest, including first place in the daily newspaper category in 2007 for his story about Mark Wilson’s display of sportsmanship in winning the Honda Classic. He also won first place in the daily special projects category in 2006 for a series of stories that included a probing look into the rivalry between architect Robert Trent Jones’ sons.
While with the Sun-Sentinel, Mell also covered the University of Miami football program for 10 years, and won first place in the Associated Press Sport Editors National Newspaper contest in 1995. He won for “best investigative reporting” for a story detailing improprieties in the football program’s drug-testing program. Mell also won first place in the Florida Sports Writers Association’s contest in 1994 in the investigative reporting division for a story about an agent’s secret cash payments to UM football players.
A native of Madison, Wis., Mell graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
